What is a Baptism?

At The Old St Thomas Chapel, traditional baptisms have been celebrated for over 140 years!
(well technically - 25 years as the Chapel (2000-2025) and 115 as an Anglican Church (1884-2000))!

 What is a baptism?

A Baptism is a significant religious ritual that symbolizes the cleansing of sins and the rebirth of an individual into a new life of faith and membership of the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church (i.e. the universal; church of all believers).

Baptism consists of either a person's immersion in water three times or by the pouring of water over the person's head three times, in both cases with the recitation of the words, "I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." The person is then said to be received into the family of the Christian Church.

So, Baptism is a Christian rite or sacrament. It is not necessarily ‘denominational’ unless you attend a particular denominational Church. (i.e. - you are not christened Roman Catholic unless you attend a Roman Catholic Church and abide by their rules and requirements.)

Baptisms at the Chapel are traditional and should be recognised by all church denominations within Australia.

Those who have been validly baptised in another Christian tradition and are seeking to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church do not need to be baptised again. (reference: https://becoming.catholic.au/s/article/What-is-baptism)

What’s the difference between a Baptism and a Christening?

Even though the words baptism and christening are used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference. Christening refers to the naming ceremony (to "christen" means to "give a name to") whereas baptism is one of seven sacraments in many parts of the Church Universal. What is a Naming Day?

A naming day is not a religious ceremony but it is a special occasion that celebrates the naming of a child, often serving as a non-religious alternative to a baptism. It typically involves gathering family and friends to welcome the child into the community and can be personalised to reflect the family's values and beliefs. Naming days are typically performed by a Civil Celebrant.

So whatever type of ceremony you are looking for - we can help you celebrate at the Chapel. Contact our office to check the availability of the Chapel and/or our Religious or Civil officiants.
